NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
New Student Orientation is an exciting program we have designed to welcome our incoming first-year and transfer students to the Rose-Hulman community. Arriving on campus ahead of returning students gives you time to get to know us and learn about the campus resources that are available to ensure your success at Rose-Hulman. Just as important to your success is meeting new friends while having A LOT of fun … and we have made plenty of time for that too!
New Student Orientation begins with Move-In at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 25th and will conclude on Wednesday, August 30th. Classes begin Thursday, August 31st.
PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION
Parent and Family Orientation is scheduled to take place starting with Move-In at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 25th and will conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 26th. New students, their parents, and family members are invited to participate in a variety of events during these two days.
We look forward to welcoming all our new students and families in August!
Please note: While most events are open to everyone, there are several special events that are only for students or for parents/families. Events designated with (S) are open only to students and events designated with (P/F) are open only to parents and families.

Were you a part of catapult and want to reunite with all your Catapult friends? This is the event to attend
7:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Spend some time learning about the history of Rose-Hulman since its founding in 1874 as the Terre Haute School of Industrial Science. This presentation will highlight the people who have made the school what it is today, and the traditions that have marked its history. Hear about such things as the origins of Rosie the Elephant, the unlamented freshman beanie, the science of the bonfire construction, outhouse placement, Greek colonization, Fightin' Engineer all-stars as well as other lore and legends. This event will be followed by a late night snack.

Vice President and Dean of Students, Mr. Erik Hayes, and Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Rick Stamper, will provide an overview of the support your student will receive at Rose-Hulman. Time will be allotted for Dean Hayes and Dr. Stamper to take questions from the audience. Students are welcomed to attend with their parents and families.

Starting college can by an exciting new adventure and staying healthy is the key to your success. Stop by the Office of Health Services to meet our healthcare team. The office is staffed by a nurse practitioner, nurses, and support staff, and operates just like a regular doctor's office. During Orientation, you will be able to get required vaccines, submit health related forms, and ask general questions about our services to help you stay healthy during the school year.
9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
If you are comfortable with your mechanics experience before coming to Rose, you can take the optional Physics I Placement Exam. If you receive a passing score on the exam, you will receive credit-by-exam for Physics I and be enrolled in Physics II for the fall term. If you do not receive a passing score on the exam, there are no negative consequences, and you will be enrolled in Physics I.
This exam will cover translational mechanics; vectors, 2-and-3-D kinematics, Newton's Laws, work and energy, linear momentum and collisions, Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, Coulomb's Law, and the Lorentz Force Law. If you would like to take the exam, please bring a calculator (graphing is fine) and pens or pencils.

Representatives from offices and programs across campus will be available to meet you, distribute information, and answer questions about the support services they provide. Check back later this summer for a list of all participating offices and services.

We are excited to offer three dining options for the Orientation Luncheon. Join us for a traditional dining hall experience in the Cafe, check out Chauncey's which is the favorite made-to-order late night option, or head outside to the Union Circle and grab lunch at Bon Appetit's food truck!
Registration is required so be sure purchase your tickets today!

President Robert Coons will deliver welcoming remarks to the new students and their families. The Class of 2027 and their families will officially become members of the Rose-Hulman Family.
3:30 PM – 3:45 PM
Immediately following the New Student Convocation, it is time to say goodbye to your family members.
After saying goodbye, you will then meet up with your residence hall friends, and join the bagpipers as you take your first walk through campus as a Rose-Hulman student!
Parents are invited to watch the procession.
Saying goodbye can be hard, but we promise to keep you busy and we promise you will have a TON OF FUN!
Remember, your family is invited back to campus for Fall Family Weekend (October 20 - 22, 2023).

August 22, 2023 - Update: Due to the unexpected high temperatures, students are invited to move in beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. We encourage you to move in as early as possible to avoid the heat and high humidity. We realize not everyone has the ability to change their arrival plans and this is not a problem! While we hope folks will arrive early to beat the heat, the end time for move-in will remain 1 p.m.

The residence halls are officially open to welcome new students and families! When you arrive on campus, you will be greeted by staff who will help you navigate traffic and get you where you need to be. Resident Assistants and Sophomore Advisors (as well as a few VIPs) will assist you and your family members in unpacking the car and moving items to assigned residence hall rooms. Let the fun begin!

The legacy event is open to all new students that have a parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, or uncle that graduated from Rose-Hulman. Stop by and pick up your special swag bag and snap a family photo. A gift will be available for alumni family members too!

Join other residents from your floor and your resident assistant for your first floor dinner. Check with your RA to figure out your meal time and where to meet!

Meet other new parents and families as well as Rose-Hulman faculty and staff, while enjoying drinks and refreshments.

Year after year, this is one of the favorite events of Orientation! Relax and have fun playing Bingo for great Rose-Hulman prizes. Light refreshments will also be served. (Kids are welcome to play!)
